Shagbark Hickory Facts
If you are seeking a hickory nut that has outstanding flavor then you need to investigate the Shagbark Carya ovata hickory tree. The large sweet nutmeats are encased by a thin but large hard shell. If you are familiar with the Shellbark hickory nut, the Shagbark has a thinner shell making it easier to get to the nutmeat. The Shagbark is self pollinating which makes it a great choice if your planting area won’t accommodate two trees. The tree can be slow growing especially in the early years.
Shagbark grows in Zones 4 – 8 and prefers drier sites. The tree grows 50-100 feet tall and 40-60 feet wide. Dark green foliage in the summer and turns to a golden brow in the fall. Life expectancy is 80 years.
